Luis van Gaal demotes Memphis Depay

Louis van Gaal has exiled another Manchester United player, after doing the same to ex Barca goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. This time the player under the thumb is the misfiring Memphis Depay.

The ex PSV winger was demoted to the Under-21 team by the Dutchman following the error which he made on Sunday that allowed Chelsea to score and draw things level.

Wayne Rooney will not have been at all impressed by the decision, considering he defendedhis teammate in the wake of the error: "Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away. So I don't think we can stand here and blame Memphis."

It's unknown whether the Dutchman intends to use Depay again because the exile treatment to reinforce good performance doesn't work with all players. It never worked with Chicarito or Di Maria and these are players who moved on and are doing amazing in their new teams.

Sometimes the problem might not be from the players but the coach. Did Di Maria or Chicarito suddenly find their mojo after leaving England? Coaching players is more than just giving tactical training.
