Taiwan Chipmakers Optimistic After Quake

The $25 bn company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, says it expects only small disruptions to the supply of chips used in smartphones & PCs after the 6.4 Richter earthquake that killed 12 and destroyed buildings.

The company manufactures chips for Apple, Qualcomm and others, and reported no injuries or damage to its factories and its deliveries won’t be affected by more than 1% this quarter. Another chip manufacturer, UMC, says it expects “no meaningful impact” from the quake.

The quake hit during the seasonally slower first quarter and so had a reduced economic impact. In comparison, a 7.3 quake in Sep 1999 stopped Taiwan’s chip industry for 6 days, hurting their economy, and also killed more than 2,400 people
